On the basis of the War Graves Agreement of October 16, 1959, most of the German war dead buried in various cemeteries in Great Britain and Northern Ireland were reburied at Cannock Chase, the central German military cemetery in Great Britain.
The only exceptions were the German soldiers who were already buried in British military cemeteries. This concerns 148 honorary plots for 1,566 dead from the First and Second World Wars. These graves will continue to be maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, the British War Graves Commission.
Furthermore, the Fort George cemetery in St. Peter Port on the Channel Island of Guernsey, with 111 fallen from the Second World War, remained.
